New York, NY • Bowery Ballroom
This was such a special show. I enjoyed myself the entire time and everything felt light and easy. I had forgotten what it felt like to play bigger shows; in some ways they’re a lot easier. In part, it’s because the sound system and the staff in bigger rooms are just better. I think I’m also just more comfortable performing with more space on stage and to bigger audiences 🤷♀️?
Our set was easy and went by really quickly and I don’t think we suffered any hiccups, though I do remember feeling that my new song, “Commitment,” felt better the previous night, in front of a more intimate audience. I think I just need to remember to crank my reverb pedal for that one.
Poor Greta was sick with a sore throat and runny nose, so she had to push through some discomfort to play this show. She sounded great though. I picked up her illness and came down with it a few days after the show and was sick for a while lol oops.
During the Frankie Cosmos set, they called us out on stage to sing a chorus of “Being Alive” all together, which was fun. I love singing with Greta!
Something funny that happened was before the show, Barrie and I decided to go on a little dinner and matcha date, but then we offered to get everyone drinks too. Everyone had all different orders and ultimately we kind of spent our whole date running around getting everyone’s drink orders. So we learned our lesson from that.
In addition to playing at Bowery, where the staff makes playing a show feel effortless because they’re such a well-oiled machine and are very talented at their jobs (and so fun to see our friend RJ from back in the Shea Stadium days), it was a thrill to get to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Next Thing with my best friend and favorite collaborator. It was fun going back through every old picture of us together we could dig up to promote this show and then get to remember the circumstances surrounding them. We have had such a fun, storied friendship and the show kind of felt like a celebration of that, in addition to Greta’s incredible accomplishments throughout the past ten years since releasing Next Thing. I feel really lucky that I got to play this show.
