Brooklyn, NY • Union Pool
Union Pool is such a sweet little venue. It was really hot on this day and I had decided to wear this pair of my dad’s old wool pants that my friend Grace Weir very generously altered for me on the day of the show. I had a vision of taking them in the way I had seen at a thrift store in Japan back in 2018 and have been dreaming of doing myself for years. You take the front and pinch it to fit your waist, making two really big darts. For some reason I’ve been finding this seemingly easy alteration really complicated, like it just doesn’t fit right. Anyway, Grace made it happen and added this amazing, neon green contrast stitching to the blue wool pants and it looked awesome.
I was nervous for this show so I took a beta blocker. It was my first time taking my prescription, which is 20mg.
The show went really smoothly because Beck Zegans was doing sound and she’s so good at it. To be honest, I don’t remember much from our set, except that I was thinking about the fact that my best friend from middle school was in the audience (who is insanely talented at everything she sets her mind to, she’s an incredible, multi-hyphenate artist (she painted the album cover for GABBY SWORD) and a skilled home improver and a brilliant writer and a skilled gardener and to top it all off a really fun friend) and that it was her first time seeing me play a show and it was tripping me out a bit. I was thinking a lot about my lyrics, kind of re-hearing them for the first time in a long time. After performing them so many times throughout the years, they’ve become committed to muscle memory and I don’t really get to grapple with their meanings very often.
We played a cover of Frankie Cosmos’ “Awooga” and I almost cried. We also played “Commitment” for the first time live and I thought it went really well.
Seeing Frankie Cosmos play Next Thing all the way through was really fun. I stood in the corner at stage right and hurt my cheeks smiling through the whole thing. They’re such a good, tight band live, despite Greta’s crazy tempo changes and through-composed music. That’s part of what makes it so fun to be in that band. I miss it!
After the show I started seeing the-bottom-of-a-swimming-pool light streaked across everything and I realized I was about to get my second migraine ever. Thank goodness for Barrie and Grace, who helped pack everything up and get me to bed, though I did manage to eat a taco or two in the backyard in my sunglasses before we left lol.
