Queens NY • Cassette

Gabby’s World, Stephen Steinbrink, Market

Even though it was so long after our tour in October, we decided to consider this the NYC show since there wasn’t one. And we were still pretty road-tight, which was cool, despite taking two months off from playing together.

This show was crazy for me outside of the show itself because I moved back to NYC the day before we started rehearsals for this show and I came down with the flu on the day of the move, so I was pretty horribly sick during rehearsals and even had to cancel one at the behest of my wife and all of my bandmates.

But even so, rehearsals went really well—Greta was super generous with us and let us use her practice space for a few days—and we were feeling really ready. My voice wasn’t at its best but it would do.

Market’s set was so beautiful. Nate has such a wonderful voice and such delicate songs; it would be cool to sing together some time.

And Stephen Steinbrink’s set was awesome. I don’t think I’d seen him play before even though we’ve been in each others’ orbits forever. I felt honored to have been asked to play the show.

And our set was good.

The only thing that went “wrong” during this show was the fact that my parents were in the audience and suddenly I was thinking about the lyrics to “Beast On Beast” and I started crying. But luckily everyone knew I had a sore throat and when I said, “can you help me?” (Jordyn? Grace?) took over the main vocal until I could hop back in in the chorus. Interesting!
